JET exhaust detritiation system replacement—design, commissioning, and operation

Abstract The exhaust detritiation system (EDS) of the Joint European Torus (JET) active gas handling removes tritium from gases and contaminated air prior to discharge stack. was replaced JET’s experimental campaign due corrosion damage. In this paper, following topics are presented: function description, failure previous EDS, enhancements for replacement EDS including testing acid passivation column, commissioning experience, operating experience performance. Acids hydrofluoric were generated in catalytic recombiners inadvertent halogen ingress. Pitting identified with breakthrough condensate pipework. To mitigate a recurrence, novel sub-system designed. demonstrated successful performance design calcium-hydroxide packing tested, acids below limit detectability at test column outlet. Issues encountered during described key metrics such as factor reported. Finally, operational issues is presented.
